It has been a long time since director Sreenu Vaitla tasted success. He has now teamed up with his friend and 'Dubai Seenu' star Mass Maharaja Ravi Teja who is also struggling with two debacles 'Touch Chesi Chudu' and 'Nela Ticket' and is coming up with an action-comedy-drama 'Amar Akbar Anthony'. They roped in Ileana D'Cruz back into Tollywood with this film. As a big production banner like Mythri Movie Makers bankrolled this project and the trailer showcased Sreenu Vaitla mark comedy, the film gained decent buzz. Ending the wait the film has finally hit the screens on November 16th. Let's check out the review of the movie.
Story: Amar Akbar Anthony is a regular revenge drama which has a different concept. The movie opens with a flashback. Back in 2003, business partners of Two Indian families living in New York kill them. The only survivors from those families are Amar ( Raviteja ) and Aishu ( Ileana ). The two are set to avenge the death of their families by killing the criminals. Interestingly, both Amar and Aishu have dissociative identity disorder. How they take their revenge despite suffering from DID? Forms the rest of the story.
Performances: Ravi Teja is definitely the show-stealer of this film. He is one of the biggest assets for this film. His never-ending energy levels and his sensible performance will impress the audience for sure. Ileana looked gorgeous and beautiful. Though she looked somewhat bubbly, she performed her role well. Vikramjeet Virk looked powerful in the film. Though he got a complicated role, he handled it really well. Abhimanyu Singh has been showing improvement with every role he does and he did it again. Tarun Arora justified his role well. Laya is definitely a special attraction for this film. Her performance is quite good. Sunil, Vennela Kishore, Satya, Raghu Babu, Sayaji Shinde also made their presence felt.
Technical Aspects: Sreenu Vaitla is regular with his unimpressive comedy and narration. He has prepared a gripping point and weaved a story filled with comedy just like that and hence it lacks the entertaining elements. His narration is completely pale and is unbearable. The production values by Mythri Movie Makers are super rich. Having the backing of a big production banner like this is one of the biggest assets for this film. SS Thaman scored refreshing music for the film. Though only two songs are good in the film, his background score is amazing. Cinematography by Venkat C Dileep is excellent. He produced sleek and stunning visuals which gave an eye feast for the audience. Editing by MR Varma is clean and neat. The runtime is crisp.
Verdict: In Tollywood, we have seen a bunch of movies which are based on revenge. 'Amar Akbar Anthony' is also once such story but with a different concept as both the leads suffer from a disorder. The entire movie runs with the beautiful backdrop of New York and visuals are rich. Directed narrated the story well. The first half is completely average with the regular comedy. Sreenu Vaitla satired big on Telugu organizations. The interval bang is the highlight but it could not stand out for a long time in the movie. The second half started on a good note but felt rushed. With a lot of flaws, the movie is not at all gripping. The director concluded the film on a rushing note. On the whole, 'Amar Akbar Anthony' is a one time watchable flick.
