After scoring a blockbuster with '2.O', Superstar Rajinikanth is back to give a power-packed treat with his movie 'Petta'. Vijay Sethupathi, Trisha, Simran, Bobby Simha, M Sasikumar, Nawazuddin Siddiqui played vital roles in the film. Touted to be an action entertainer, Karthik Subbaraj of 'Jigarthanda' Fame helmed this project. Kalanidhi Maran under Sun Pictures bankrolled this project. The teaser and trailer of the film have already proved that the movie is going to be an eye feast for the action lovers. The film carried a decent pre-release buzz and finally made it into the theatres today on January 10th, 2019. Here is the review of the movie.
Kaali (Rajinikanth) is a hostel warden who is employed to bring control over the ragging issues existing in the hostel. Within a less time, he becomes very close with the students there. Simhachalam (Nawazuddin Siddique) is searching for Petta and eventually finds that Petta changed his identity to Kali. Why did that happen? Who is Peta? Forms the story of the movie.
When it comes to performances, we can consider Rajinikanth and Vijay Sethupathi as the two pillars for the movie. Rajinikanth did his best in showing variations between the two shades of his character and he will definitely get full marks for that. Vijay Sethupathi also got an interesting character and no one can justify that role except Vijay Sethupathi. Simran looked beautiful and delivered a peppy performance in the film. Her chemistry with Rajinikanth is very cute. Trisha looked not only good in terms of looks, but she also grabbed the attention with her performance. M Sasikumar's performance at elevated the depth of the movie. Nawazuddin Siddiqui went under the skin of the character and delivered his best. Bobby Simha also gave his best performance in the movie. The rest of the cast also made their presence felt.
The production values of Kalanidhi Maran under Sun Pictures are pretty much decent. Music by Anirudh Ravichander should get a bigger piece of cake. Especially his BGM in the action sequences is too good. Tirru produced some beautiful visuals for the movie. The backgrounds in the first half are also pleasant. The runtime is crisp. Dialogues by M Rajshekar Reddy are good.
Director Karthik Subbaraj tried to present a routine story in a different way by adding some commercial elements. There are sometimes where he tests the patience of the audience with his slow-paced narration. But, he succeeded in executing the script really well. A decent first half is certainly in front of the audiences as the freshness in execution is evident in every scene.
Karthik Subbaraj has elevated a new Rajinikanth on the big screen and it is certainly a big treat for all the fans. Storywise, it is dull but the screenplay is amazing. The movie stands up to the promotional tagline that it will be a treat for the fans. The movie's climax twist satisfies the audiences and the writer in Karthik Subbaraj made a victory again. With few shortcomings, Petta is definitely a watchable movie.
