After 'Oopiri' with Kollywood star Karthi, Nagarjuna teamed up with Tollywood natural star Nani for a multi starrer movie 'Devadas'. Touted to be a full-length comedy entertainer, Sriram Aditya of 'Bhale Manchi Roju' and 'Shamanthakamani' fame directed the movie. With Akanksha Singh and Rashmika Mandanna as the female leads the much-anticipated film has finally hit the screens today. The expectations are sky high on this film and the promotional material succeeded in creating a huge buzz. Let's check out the review of the movie.
Story: Deva (Nagarjuna) is a mafia don and is a most-wanted criminal. As his enemies kill his Godfather (Sarath Kumar), Deva who has been in exile for 10 years comes out for revenge. Getting this information, the police prepare a sketch to catch him. Deva was who gets injured in a police attack gets treatment from Dr Dasu (Nani). Though he is a criminal, Nani treats him well which impresses Deva and then begins their friendship. The duo becomes good friends but Nani soon realises that it is not easy to be a friend of a Gangster. Despite having poles apart characters, how friendship blossomed between Deva and Dasu? How Deva protects himself from the police? What happened to his revenge? What happens in the end? forms the crux of the story.
Performances: The entire story revolves around Nagarjuna and Nani and the duo did a splendid job in justifying their roles. The chemistry between Naagin Nani will be one of the major highlights in the film. When compared between Nagarjuna and Nani, we can say that Nagarjuna will be the one to steal the show with his young look and energetic performance. Rashmika Mandanna looked beautiful and maintained a good chemistry with Nani. Akanksha Singh also did a great job and showed improvement in her acting when compared to her previous film 'Malli Raava'. Both the heroines looked gorgeous in the movie. Sarathkumar has a small role in the film but did a good job. Naveen Chandra, Murali Sharma and Vennela Kishore also acted well and gave their best performances. The rest of the cast members also made their presence felt.
Technical Aspects: Coming to the story, 'Devadas' has a very simple plotline but the director executed it well. His narration is quite good in the first half. The entertainment in the movie dominates the story of the film. Nag and Nani are perfect for the roles which have a scope for performance. Keeping their star image aside, the duo actors did their best in generating comedy. The production values by Ashwini Dutt under Vyjayanthi movies are lavish. Mani Ratnam's music is excellent. The background score will be one of the major plus points in the film. Shyamdutt Sainuddin handled the camera well. All the camera angles are nice. Editing is clean and neat.
Verdict: Sometimes more than the story, the films turn out to be super hits only because of entertainment. The director used the same formula for the film. The film has a weak plot but with the comedy as a highlight. The story is not even complicated and is a simple plot line but the entertainment became the driving factor behind the film.
However, there are some scenes that could have been edited out but won't disturb the flow. Despite starting on a serious note, the film generates fun as soon as the entry of Nag and Nani. The entry scenes are good. The chemistry between Nag and Nani will be one of the highlights. The interval bang is interesting.
The second half slows down in terms of narration. But, the audience will stay engaged with the emotions that are coming out. People who want to laugh out loud can pick 'Devadas' without any hesitation.
