Aranmanai, a horror film, was a massive hit in 2014. The sequel Aranmanai 2 naturally generated lot of enthusiasm. The film has now been dubbed into Telugu as Kalavathi. Will this film work the magic? Will it send chill down the spine? Or will it also dole out lots of laughs? Let' see.
Story
The village chieftain organises Kumbhabhishekam to the village deity. But, suddenly, his palatial mantion gets haunted and the chieftain becomes comatose. Then Murali (Siddharth) and his would-be Anitha (Trisha) come to the mansion. They realize that the mansion is haunted and Murali's brother gets attacked by the spirit. Then Murali gets to know that the spirit haunting the mansion is none other than his dead sister Kala (Hansika). Anitha Brother Ravi (sunder C) and Murali tries to get rid of this Problem with the Help of Saints.
Why does Kala die and why does she want to wreak vengeance forms the storyline.
Performances
There is little doubt that Siddharth is multi-talented and can get under the skin of any character. He does his part well and demonstrates a range of emotions in the movie. As for Trisha, she continues to surprise us. Even after 14 years long career, she looks fresh as a flower and her action is excellent. She sizzles in romantic scenes with Siddharth. Hansika lost oodles of weight and acts well. She acts well both as a emotional sister and a vengeful spirit. Poonam Bajwa plays a Malayali nuse. The other actors do justice to their role. Special mention should be made of Kovai Sarala, who makes ROFL.
Technical
The film has a taut screenplay and a gripping direction. The songs are well choreographed and the tunes are very good. The dialogues, especially the comedy dialogues, are quite good. The highlight is the 103 feet high statue of the deity, which looks both spectacular and staggering. The direction and camera work are wonderful.
Filmbuzz analysis
Though this is a dubbing movie, one does not feel that this is a Tamil film. Most stars are well known to the Telugu audience. So, this looks every inch a straight Telugu film and connects well to the Telugu viewers. The first half is good. The second half loses plot occasionally. But, the comedy track provides relief and the film doesn't bore.
Kalavathi, which horrifies and tickles you at the same time is quite gripping as it is entertaining. It is a must watch. Will do well in A, B, C and all centres. Enjoy it.
