Actor Sunil Varma, who is famous for making comic movies, has lied flat for the last two years without any movie release. This time, he has comeback with a story-based film Krishnashtami, which hit the screens today, to register a hit. Let’s see if Sunil leaves audience in awe.
Story: Krishna Vara Prasad, who leaves India after the death of his parents, leads a happening life in the US as a video-game designer. He was raised by his uncle. However, he loves to come back to his homeland and settle down. Whenever he plans to come back, something used to come up and his attempts used to go in vain. Upset and frustrated over his situation, Krishna takes a flight to India without informing his uncle.
It was yet another jinxed attempt for him as his connecting flight from Europe gets cancelled and gets stuck there for three days. In his stay there, non-interested in arranged marriages, he falls in love with Pallavi (Nikki Galrani). He also meets a person called Ajay while waiting for the connecting flight at the airport.
In an unexpected incident, Krishna and Ajay will be attacked by some unknown people. Both of them manage to escape the attack. This adds to his existing problems.
Considering the situation of Ajay, who was brutally injured in the attack, Krishna, disguised as Ajay, goes to the latter’s maternal uncle’s place in Chittoor. What happens next? Why does he go to Chittoor are questions the can only be answered by watching the movie?
Performances: A role that needs an action hero or at least somebody who has left an impression of being serious, Sunil – known for his comedy – has stepped in. If there is a uniqueness about him then that is his comic relief roles. However, in this movie, Krishna (Sunil) has not done a bit of comedy. Though he is sincere in his efforts, it is tough for audience, who accepted him as a comedian, to appreciate his performance. However, he to an extent managed to keep the audience busy with his dance.
Nikki Garlani, a debutant in Tollywood, does good the mere role she has been given. The beauty of Nikki Garlani and Dimple Chopade can appease male audience. Though Ashutosh Rana has been given a lengthy role, his character and acting could not justice. Mukesh Rishi has been given a typical pedananna role for which he did some justice. The comedy parts of Saptagiri and Brahmanandam could not do the magic.
Analysis: The story of Krishnashtami offers nothing new and the screenplay remains dreary for in most of the scenes. Sunil once again tried to put in an energetic performance. But they may not take him to another level as story has nothing new to offer. The characterisation of the leading ladies is not good. However, it is Sunil’s show all the way. He dances and fights with ease in his inimitable style. Saptagiri and Posani evoked laughs but Brahmi has been wasted this time too. Another minus point is its music.
Krishnashtami has many twists and turns that but failed to generate curiosity among the audience. Production values look quite rich, and Producer Dil Raju has not compromised. Screenplay of the film is not impressive, as the placement of the scenes are quite predictable. On the other hand, Dinesh Kanagaratnam comes up with songs which will not stay with you long after you have left the theatre.
Verdict: On the whole, Krishnashtami is definitely not that one film that Sunil has been desperately looking for the past two years. Story of the film is quite routine, and has nothing new ​to offer. Comedy makes the film watchable but the routine story brings more yawns.
It is high time for Sunil to put in more efforts at choosing scripts that the audiences are looking forward instead of routine films.
