Puri Jagannadh these days, is finding it tough get a hit. Nonetheless, he is coming with films one after the other. Now, his youthful entertainer ‘Rogue’ had released today starring debutant Ishaan and Mannara Chopra. Let us see if Puri managed to entertain the audience or not.
Story: Chanti (Ishaan) a care-free youngster gets cheated by his girlfriend (Anjela) and ends up hating women. Shattered by this, he fights with a cop and breaks his legs. After seeing his family position, Chanti decides to help them which also has Anjali (Mannara Chopra).
When everything seems going good enough, a psycho (Anoop Singh) enters the scene and starts following Anjali. Chanti steps in to save her and they both fall in love in that process. Rest of the story is all about Chanti saving Anjali from the psycho.
Positives: There is only handful of things which went well in ‘Rogue’ and Ishaan is the best of the lot. He looks good and confident onscreen. Looks like Puri did a lot of home work to present Ishaan in a stylish and massy way. Ishaan easily slipped into the shoes of a typical Puri hero with no trouble.
Mannara Chopra looks good and shares good chemistry with Ishaan. The proceedings are quite racy and some typical Puri mark dialogues on girls may thrill youth. Anoop Singh impresses as an antagonist and looks macho.
Flaws: Though the proceedings are racy like every Puri film, the story has nothing in it. The logic in the film goes for a toss and film looks over the top in the second half. Puri’s narration lacked clarity. Scenes like psycho killer roaming freely even after kidnapping 50 women are aplenty in this flick.
Also, Puri goes overboard in terms of female bashing and it irritates after some time. None of the scenes made a mark and hero-villain scenes defies logic as well as gravity.
Ali’s comedy is boring and Puri failed to give him a good track in this flick. The character of the Anoop is eccentric and silly at times.
Technicians: The film had a strong technical support. The production values, art work, stylish cinematography are top notch. Music by Sunil Kashyap is okay but his background score is superb. The editing is good and nothing much could have been done on this film.
Coming to director Puri, he disappoints audience big time. It looks as if he lost his midas touch. There is nothing story wise and the screenplay too looks sloppy. His dialogues lacked the punch and a film of this kind is never expected from a director for his stature.
Conclusion: ‘Rogue’ is a below par romantic drama which is backed by rich technical value. But, content and execution plays the spoilsport in this film. Though Puri succeeded in launching Ishaan as a star, he fails badly as a writer-director. Looks like Puri had to wait for some more time for his hit.
