The combination of Nagarjuna Akkineni and Ram Gopal Varma which delivered trend-setting movies in the past is back for the fourth time collaboration almost after two decades for an exciting cop drama that is inspired by a real-life story. The movie is titled as Officer, which is released today. The film is set in the backdrop of Mumbai where Nagarjuna is seen as a leader for a special investigating team of officers which will investigate a fake encounter.
The first look posters and trailers could not create enough buzz, but the recent promotions of the movie have generated particular interest in the film. The film stars Myra Sarin in the leading lady role, and Ram Gopal Varma turned producer for this movie and bankrolled it on R Company banner. Check out the review of the film here.
Story: The film happens in Mumbai. A police officer named Narayan Pasari kills three underworld men in an encounter. The police department appoints Shivaji Rao IPS (Nagarjuna) to investigate this fake encounter.
Shivaji Rao picks his team and starts the investigation and comes to know several things in the process. What are they? How did Shivaji Rao complete the investigation? Forms the story of the film.
Performances: Nagarjuna Akkineni is entirely different in this film when compared to his previous movies. Ram Gopal Varma tried to present Nagarjuna in a subtle and sharp role. As a police officer, Nagarjuna has given his best and tried to essay his role with conviction.
Myra Sarin, the lady who made her debut with the film, is not so glamorous but has played her part well in the movie. The actor who played Narayana Pasari is right and tried his best to put his maximum for the movie. The child artist did her part well. The rest of the cast made their presence felt.
Technicalities: The cinematography is the only positive aspect of the film and Bharath Vyas did that. The mood and tone of the film are completely different and are apt for the story. The music by Ravi Shankar is unimpressive but the background score has come out well. The editing by Anwar Ali and R Kamal is okay.
The story is different but the director has failed to bring out a unique screenplay out of it. The dialogues are good. The production values by R Company banner are rich.
Verdict: The first half of the movie offers uniqueness regarding storytelling. It creates an expectation for watching the second half and also gives us a different movie watching experience. The subject of the film is very typical in Ram Gopal Varma's style. It deals with too many things like Mafia and Police, but the only decisive factor is the story running through the investigation on a fake encounter that is committed by a police officer.
Though there are some positive aspects of the film, the pointless tale and weak screenplay in the second half have ruined everything. Ram Gopal Varma yet again disappoints the audiences with his weird camera angles and frustrates Nagarjuna fans who are waiting for a hit.
